What are Majority Markets?

In Latin America and the Caribbean 70% of the people support themselves on very low incomes. These people make up “the base of the pyramid” (BoP) – the largest part of the population, with the least money. But “little money” does not mean “no money.” The BoP in Latin America and the Caribbean is estimated to have collective purchasing power of about $500 billion per year – largely untapped. This majority is a market rich in potential.

With the right partnerships and plans in place, the possibilities for reaching majority markets are endless, and so are the potential benefits.

MajorityMarkets.org exists to:

  • Build a community of donors, researchers, practitioners, investors, entrepreneurs, local governments and other key audiences involved in majority markets and promote online collaboration and share knowledge around these important issues;
  • Provide a marketplace for organizations that want to engage in Majority Markets, particularly for those seeking finance or providing it; and
  • Create a highly-interactive online presence that serves as a platform to promote profitable business models serving the base of the pyramid in Latin America and the Caribbean;

The resources of the IDB’s Opportunities for the Majority initiative are available to help you engage in Majority Markets in Latin America and the Caribbean. But pooling resources from other strategic partners is crucial to getting more projects off the ground.

How You Can Get Involved

MajorityMarkets.org provides a channel for all partners to promote their operations and activities focused on viable business models and creating opportunities for the Base of the Pyramid. Partners will be able to provide relevant information about their missions and specific details on their services, products and their role in the overall process.

Another way you may participate is getting involved in the creation of highly-focused content on the challenges and benefits of engaging in initiatives for the BOP.

We welcome your participation. Sharing experiences and stimulating the dialogue will be key to achieving success.
